Speaker: Greg Patterson, Senior Sales Engineer (BCD, A Division of Fresche)
Topic: From RPG OA to Node.js: Modernization Solutions for the IBM i Platform
Who Should Attend: Developers and Administrators. All (members and non-members) are welcome.
Greg Patterson has been in the IT field for 17 years, the last 8 with BCD, where he is currently a Senior Sales Engineer. In addition to business development activities, Greg also coordinates pre-sales technical demonstrations and discussions, performs business analysis and is sometimes involved at the coding level for specific projects. Greg has a deep knowledge of BCD products from his time spent in support as a Senior Presto Support Specialist.
There are many different approaches to modernizing green screens and developing new IBM i web and mobile applications. In this session, you’ll learn the pros and cons of RPG OA, refacing, PHP and Node.js. If you have an HTTP application workload now, or are considering it in the future, please attend this session and see how easily it can be to administer, developer, and carve out multiple-environments without the complexity and overhead of another LPAR or full OS to manage.
You’ll also see technical demos of how to modernize green screens and develop new web and mobile applications with BCD’s Presto and WebSmart solutions.
Greg will give us 15 minutes covering the pros/cons of the various application modernization methodologies followed by two product demonstrations.
Come on out and show your support for BCD. Special thanks to Maxava (Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery, & High Availability Software for the IBM i) for their generous contributions and support of the UIIPA membership.
UPDATE: We want to thank Russ Roberts for sharing with us this valuable information regarding IBM i Modernization. Very well done! If you were not able to make it to the meeting you can access the slides for his presentation here: Presentation File

Alright! Winter is now over and it’s Spring Fever!
Time for the new, refreshing change of pace. This Wednesday, April 10th, in the Murray City Auditorium at 11 am, we’ll be instructed by Ammon Lee, the webmaster for Alpine School District.
No matter what server a company is running for their business, these days they also need a web site. The bigger the company, the more complex that becomes. Ammon manages a site with over 100 schools and departments that have content for the site. He uses WordPress to accomplish that.
Here is his description of what he is going to be presenting:
Intro to WordPress
Learn about one of the most successful and used open source applications for building a website. In this presentation, we will cover many of the features that have made Wordpress such a popular platform for webpage creation and management. We will also be covering everything you need to set up your very own Wordpress installation, and build a very professional looking website with little to no coding experience in less than an hour. In addition, will discuss current ways people, companies, and public organizations are using Wordpress in various different types of applications.
Jason Nacey from ADP gave us an excellent presentation on the basics of building web pages to access the IBM i database using Java tools. He gave us examples and links to additional resources that are great to help us get started on our own projects. Great presentation and great questions by the users. Read more »
